We offer a variety of crime prevention programs to educate our students, staff and faculty in ways they can prevent themselves from becoming victims on or off campus. Our crime prevention programs are free of charge to any group of students, staff or faculty. Request a crime prevention program. 

The Office of Campus Safety offers a presentation and discussion of armed intruder preparation techniques, warning signs, and survival tactics, accompanied by a question and answer section. Training is recommended for all units at all levels, including students. Classes are generally scheduled at least one month in advance. Campus Safety personnel will walk-through the desired building or area prior to training and give recommendations for protective actions. Recommendations will then be displayed on floor plans for use in a building-specific action plan and included in the training. The University Police Department offers free self-defense courses throughout the academic year for female students, faculty and staff. In an atmosphere of support, you become more prepared to manage potential violence by reducing risk factors and learning basic physical self-defense techniques. You will learn strategies to increase personal safety and awareness, boundary assertion skills and self-defense techniques. Class format includes discussion, physical training, simulation exercises and information about support services. Schedule your training or call (512) 448-8444 for more information. 

Bike owners are strongly encouraged to register their bikes at the University Police Department during normal business hours to receive a special decal, which helps deter theft and can assist in the identification/reunification process when a bike is stolen. If you bike is missing, immediately call the University Police Department at (512) 448-8444 to check if it was impounded or to report it stolen. 

Share the Road Texas strives to educate both cyclists & motorists on college campuses about bicycle laws, safe riding behaviors and the importance of motorist awareness of bicycles on the road.

Drivers are encouraged to:

• look for bicycles before turning at an intersection or driveway,
• look for bicycles before opening the door of a car parked on the street and
• allow plenty of room when passing a bicycle.

Cyclists are reminded to:

• observe all traffic signs and signals,
• follow right-of-way rules at intersections and
• use lights and bright colors to make themselves as visible as possible.

When an officer is available, the University Police Department is happy to provide campus safety escorts, at any time, for students, faculty and staff who have a legitimate safety concern. Escorts may be provided in a vehicle or on foot depending on availability and officer discretion.

Vehicle jump-starts are also available on campus for free. All you need is a current St. Edward’s University I.D. or a driver’s license and an officer will be dispatched to your location as soon as possible.

In accordance with the Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act of 2000, which amends the Jacob Wetterling Crimes against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act, the Jeanne Clery Act and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, the St. Edward’s University Police Department is providing a link to the Texas Public Sex Offender Registry, maintained by the Texas Department of Public Safety.  

This act requires institutions of higher education to issue a statement advising the campus community where law enforcement information provided by a state concerning registered sex offenders may be obtained. It also requires sex offenders already required to register in a state to provide notice of each institution of higher education in that state at which the person is employed, carries a vocation or is a student. Persons wishing to inquire about registered sex offenders who are enrolled at or are employed at St. Edward’s University may search the Texas Public Sex Offender Registry by Institution of Higher Education. 

Beginning September 1, 2015, St. Edward’s will make University Police Department records that relate solely to law enforcement available to the public pursuant to the Texas Public Information Act (PIA), Texas Government Code, Chapter 552, as amended by Senate Bill 308, unless the records are exempt from disclosure by the PIA or other law.

The University Police Department is responsible for maintaining all records related solely to law enforcement subject to disclosure under the PIA. The University Police Department is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and closed on weekends and University holidays.

All requests submitted to the University Police Department under the PIA must be in writing and can be made as follows:

All correspondence must be clearly marked “Public Information Request.” Be sure to include:

• Your name,
• Your mailing address,
• Your phone number, and
• A list/description of the records you need, preferably with dates. The more accurate and specific you can be, the faster the records can be located.

The Police Department will review all written requests for public records and respond to the requestor within 10 business days. In response to a request, the Police Department may:

• Inform the requestor if the information cannot be provided promptly and set a date and time to provide it within a reasonable time;
• Request a ruling from the Office of the Attorney General of Texas regarding any information the SEU Police Department wishes to withhold from public disclosure as allowed under the PIA, and send a copy of the request for ruling, or a redacted copy, to the requestor; or
• Segregate public information from information that may be withheld by law and provide the public information promptly.

The requestor will receive a written statement of estimated charges when necessary, in advance of work being started, and have the opportunity to modify the request in response to the itemized statement. Fees will be calculated in accordance with Section 70.3 of the Texas Administrative Code. The requestor can choose whether to inspect the requested information being made available at the SEU Police Department during regular business hours at no cost, or receive or make copies of the records for a fee as may be allowed by law.
