Generating Collaborative Solutions to Challenging Public Issues

The Kozmetsky Center of Excellence is the hub connecting our campus, students and faculty with civic life in Austin, Texas.

Working with nonprofit organizations, public officials, leading scholars and media experts, the center provides a forum for solving some of our worlds most challenging public issues. We facilitate and promote opportunities for students and faculty to form working relationships with individuals and groups that are civically engaged in a public capacity.

Our on-campus civics lab, podcasts, student projects and interviews with political experts, along with hosting forums and conversations on campus, provide an engine for generating collaborative solutions among experts, students, faculty and the broader public.

The Kozmetsky Center contributes to advancing the mission of St. Edwards University to educate a diverse student body, preparing graduates with the tools needed to contribute to a more humane, just and sustainable world.

The Kozmetsky Center of Excellence is the hub of civic engagement at St. Edward's University.  Our programs, student-led projects, panels, and activities, are all focused on connecting students to the skills and tools that make them active and involved citizens. The American democratic experiment is built on the power of the people to be engaged.

Mirabeau B. Lamar, Second President of the Texas Republic captures the heart of what the Kozmetsky Center represents, when he said: that a "cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy, and while guided and controlled by virtue, the noblest attribute of man [individuals]."  Our mission is to promote civic virtues that enable St. Edward's University students to analyze, inquire, and act on their status as free and equal members of society.
