AUSTINThe
Randall Vetter Memorial Scholarship, established at St. Edward's
University in September 2000, has reached its $25,000 endowment
goal, thanks to a gift from the 100 Club and Cynthia Vetter, widow
of Randy Vetter. A ceremony will take place on Friday, June 8 at
1 p.m. on the Ragsdale Plaza in front of the Ragsdale Center on
the campus of St. Edward's University. In the event of rain, the
ceremony will be held in the Lucas Room of the Ragsdale Center.
The
scholarship funds will be awarded annually to a criminal justice
major displaying academic excellence and dedication to community
service. The 100 Club is a group that raises funds for the families
of fallen officers.
Vetter,
the DPS trooper who was killed in the line of duty during a traffic
stop near San Marcos, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor
of arts in criminal justice from St. Edward's University in May
1994. During his days as a St. Edward's University student, Vetter
served as both vice-president and president of the university's
chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice academic
society. David M. Horton, professor and director of St. Edward's
University Criminal Justice Program described Vetter as the "quintessential
poster-boy for what professional law enforcement in our democratic
society should stand for at the dawn of the new millennium."
Vetter
was a resident of New Braunfels and a graduate of Canyon High School.
St.
Edward's University is an independent Catholic liberal arts university
of 3,800 students in Austin. It was founded by the Congregation
of Holy Cross.
