Austin,
Texas has been selected as one of 10 satellite-linked locations
around the country to participate in a special program on the world's
environmental challenges through The Earth Charter Community Summit.
The Summit will take place on Sat., Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
in the Mabee Ballroom of the Ragsdale Center at St. Edward's University.
This event is free and open to the public. Featured panelists and
participants include Robin Rather, former president of Save Our
Springs Alliance, and Dr. Jack Bacon, an engineer of the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The
Earth Charter Community Summits are an historic grassroots movement
or create and maintain an economically just and environmentally
sustainable global society. The Earth Charter is an international
treaty to sustain the planet and is the result of a grassroots drafting
process in 56 countries over 12 years.
Growing
out of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, it was revitalized in 1994 by
Maurice Strong, secretary general of the Earth Summit; Mikhail Gorbachev,
chair of Green Cross International; and the Dutch government. Steven
Rockefeller chaired the international drafting committee, and plans
are underway to present the Earth Charter to the United Nations'
General Assembly for endorsement in June 2002.
The four principles of the Charter are: 1) ecological integrity,
2) economic and social justice, 3) peace, democracy and human rights
and 4) respect and care for the community of life.
