Magic
and imagination! "The Conference of the Birds" is an allegorical
rendering of Sufismthe secretive and paradoxical form of Islamic
mysticism. Like Canterbury Tales, it consists of a group of short
stories bound together by a pilgrimage.
All
the birds of the world gather together on a hazardous journey to
find their ideal king. At first enthusiastic, the birds soon find
many excuses to end this important mission. Their leader, the Hoopoe,
offers a series of riddles as he leads them through the Seven Valleys
and a self discovery.
The
cast features equity guest artists Melba Martinez and Bhagerit
Crow, with live music from The Gypsies, world-class musicians
devoted to playing indigenous Middle Eastern music. Productions
of "The Conference of the Birds" can be enjoyed February
21 ® March 4 at St. Edward's University's Mary Moody Northen Theatre
located at 3001 South Congress Avenue. Show times are Wednesdays
through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are
