AUSTINFor
the second consecutive year, two St. Edward's University basketball
guards, Ryan Flores, '02, of McAllen, Texas, and Benjamin Lyman,
'01, of Kyle, Texas, were named 2001 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars
Awardees by Black Issues in Higher Education (April 26, 2001).
Flores was named to the first team and Lyman named to the second
team.
Named
after the famous tennis professional Arthur Ashe, the award recognizes
both athletic and scholastic achievement among university and college
athletes. Ashe, the first African American ever selected for the
U.S. Davis Cup team (1963), was an advocate for the teaming of athletic
prowess and academic accomplishments.
Lyman,
a graduate of Austin's Bowie High School, is an economics major
and Flores, a graduate of McAllen's James "Nikki" Rowe High School,
is a biology major.
St.
Edward's University is an independent Catholic liberal arts university
of 3,800 students in Austin.
